Brotherhood Since 1848 🏛️
Phi Gamma Delta was founded on May 1, 1848, at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, by the Immortal Six. The nickname FIJI came later from the brothers at NYU — a play on “Fee Gee” — and it stuck as the name the brotherhood wears in public.
That’s an important distinction. FIJI treats the Greek letters ΦΓΔ with reverence and limits where they appear. Everyday apparel uses FIJI. Our licensed collection follows that tradition: the wordmark, in royal purple, sewn the way chapter gear is supposed to look.
The motto still says it best: Friendship, the sweetest influence.
The Values Behind the Letters
FIJI’s five values aren’t decoration. They’re the reason the letters matter:

- Morality — do what is right, as a man and as a chapter
- Excellence — live up to the potential the brotherhood demands

Why Satin-Stitched, Sewn-On Letters 🧵
Most “Greek letter” shirts on the internet are a heat-pressed graphic or a thin zigzag tacked around cheap twill. That’s not how we build FIJI apparel.
Sewn-on letters start with cut letter fabric placed on the garment, then stitched down so the letters are part of the shirt, not sitting on top of it.
Satin stitch is the premium border: a dense, tight column of thread that wraps the edge of each letter. Compared with a zigzag stitch, satin stitch:
- Gives a clean, raised, almost-embroidered outline
- Locks the letter edge so it doesn’t fray after washes
- Lets us run royal purple letters with a crisp white border — the FIJI look from your Fall flat-lay
- Holds up on hoodies, heavyweight crews, and polos that actually get worn
That’s the difference brothers notice at mixers, formals, and alumni events. The letters look sharp up close, and they still look sharp in year three.
